Oakland--Owned by the Railroad
Oakland's revolution to regain it's waterfront was struggle against the cunning of Horace Carpentier--he used his legal skills to desanguinate the city of the wealth its prime location offered. All of Oakland should feel the wealth and beauty of our waterfront. But it was stolen and Oakland is still fighting to get it back. Carpentier tapped out a very rich man and passed the oppression on to Railroads who for decades ruthlessly monopolized trade in the Bay Area, and the entire nation.
Oakland has fought for its waterfront since the very beginning:
City of Oakland v. Carpentier, 13 California 540
City of Oakland v. Carpentier, 21 California 642
Oakland v. Oakland Water Front Company, 118 California 160
Oakland v. Oakland Water Front Company, 118 California 249
People v. Oakland Water Front Company, 118 California 234
This original stream of lawsuits continued for six decades.
Back in the late 1800s, railroad corporations controlled the government exactly like huge corporations control it now--Lying, Litigating, and Lobbying.
In addition to Oakland's waterfront, Central Pacific owned the city and state government, not just in Oakland and California. They monopolized land-based trade. They ruled tyrannically, running tracks where they wanted, running trains when they wanted, and placing officials in the positions they wanted. They became 'The Octopus'.
Nothing stays on top using tyranny. Tyranny hastens Revolution.
